Manchester City: Guardiola’s leaders survive Ipswich scare to stay top

Packed football stadium during a Premier League style match

Manchester City remain top of the Premier League after a 3-2 win over Ipswich Town at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday, October 17. It was not a comfortable afternoon for Pep Guardiola’s side, but the result keeps their perfect start to the season intact.

A lively first half

City led 2-1 at half-time after an open first 45 minutes in which Ipswich showed they would not simply sit back. The visitors, back in the Premier League this season, caused problems in transition and kept the game alive.

Ipswich keep pushing

City extended their lead in the second half, but Ipswich refused to fold and scored a second goal to set up a tense finish. City saw the game out to collect a seventh win from seven league matches.

The table

The victory takes City to 21 points, six clear of second-placed Arsenal, who have a game in hand. Ipswich stay on nine points, level with Leeds United and fellow promoted side Hull City, a solid return for their first weeks back in the top flight.

Why it matters

A 100% record after seven matches puts City in a strong position early in the season. However, conceding twice at home to a promoted team will give Guardiola plenty to work on before the next round of fixtures and the Champions League.

  • Score: Manchester City 3-2 Ipswich Town (half-time 2-1)
  • Venue: Etihad Stadium
  • City record: 7 played, 7 won, 21 points
