El Clasico Explained: The History of Real Madrid vs Barcelona

Kick-off of a La Liga match at FC Barcelona's stadium

When Real Madrid and Barcelona meet, hundreds of millions of people tune in. El Clasico is more than a football match: it is a rivalry shaped by history, politics, identity and some of the greatest players ever to play the game.

Two cities, two identities

Real Madrid represent the Spanish capital, while Barcelona are the leading club of Catalonia, a region with its own language and strong sense of identity. For much of the 20th century the fixture carried political meaning, and many Catalans see Barcelona as “mes que un club”, more than a club. That backdrop gives every Clasico an intensity few derbies can match.

Titles and trophies

The two clubs are the most successful in Spain. Real Madrid lead the league title count with 36, the latest in 2023-24. Barcelona have closed the gap with titles in 2022-23, 2024-25 and 2025-26, the last of them sealed with a 2-0 home win over Real Madrid in May 2026. In Europe, Real Madrid are untouchable with 15 European Cups, while Barcelona have won five. Read more in our article on Real Madrid’s Champions League record.
